- How long should a gate opener battery last?
- Sealed lead-acid gate batteries last 2–4 years with proper solar. Poor solar sizing or chronic deep discharges cut that in half.
- How can I test the battery myself?
- A digital multimeter reading below 12.4V rested (no load, an hour or more off charge) means the battery is at or below roughly 75% state of charge. Below 12.0V rested, plan on replacement. Under a gate cycle it should not sag below about 11.5V.
- Should I replace the battery or the solar panel first?
- Test before buying either. A rested reading under 12.0V or heavy sag under load points at the battery. A healthy battery that drains over days points at the solar side — panel size, shade, controller, fuse, or wiring.
