Solar Battery Recharge Time Calculator

What the estimate means

This tool estimates how much charge must be replaced and how many peak-sun-hours the panel needs. It then converts that ideal solar time into calendar days. It is not a promise that a battery will accept current at a constant rate.

Use it after you know the battery reserve problem you are solving. The battery reserve calculator estimates how many cloudy days the battery can carry; this page estimates how quickly useful sun can replace a known deficit.

Effective charging current1.14 A

Use a winter or shaded derating that reflects the actual mounting site. Ongoing gate loads are not included in this recharge-only estimate.

How to choose the input values

InputUse this sourceWhy it matters
Battery AhUse the battery label or the opener manual's replacement-battery spec.A worn or cold battery may deliver less than its rated capacity.
Starting and target SOCUse measured battery state when available; otherwise run best/worst scenarios.Charging from nearly full often slows because many batteries taper near full charge.
Panel wattsUse the panel nameplate for planning, then verify output in sun.Shade, dirt, mounting angle, and cable loss can keep actual watts below nameplate.
Efficiency and deratingUse conservative values for controller loss, wiring loss, season, and shade.A perfect-summer assumption can hide a winter reliability problem.

Worked example — 7 Ah battery, 50% to 100%, 20 W panel

  • Deficit: 7 × (1.00 − 0.50) = 3.5 Ah.
  • Effective current: (20 W × 0.80) ÷ 14.0 V = about 1.14 A.
  • Ideal recharge time: 3.5 ÷ 1.14 = about 3.1 peak-sun-hours.
  • At 4 peak-sun-hours/day, the baseline is about 0.8 calendar day before taper and losses beyond the entered efficiency.

How to use the result

If peak-sun-hours required is lower than one normal day's usable sun, the panel can probably recover from that one deficit on a good day. If required hours exceed the local daily peak-sun-hours, the system needs multiple good days or a smaller deficit. Compare that answer with the solar panel sizing calculator, then check wiring loss with the 12V voltage drop calculator when the panel or battery is mounted away from the opener.

For troubleshooting, run two scenarios: a best-day estimate using clean sun and a conservative winter/shade estimate. The conservative result is the one that matters for a gate that has to work after storms, short days, or low traffic periods.

Why the real result can take longer

Peak sun-hours are not the same as daylight hours: four PSH means an energy-equivalent four hours at full rated sun. PWM and MPPT controllers harvest energy differently, and the controller's operating limits matter. Lead-acid batteries commonly taper as they approach full charge; heat, aging, sulfation, clouds, panel angle, dirt, wire loss, and parasitic gate loads can all extend the calendar time.

When diagnosing a slow recharge, measure panel output in sun, controller input/output, battery voltage under load, and the load that remains connected. The opener manual and charger/controller documentation override this general model. If the battery itself turns out to be the limit, weigh replacements with the battery cost per amp-hour calculator rather than on price alone, since usable depth and cycle life change the real cost far more than the sticker figure.

Common recharge mistakes

  • Using summer peak-sun-hours for a winter gate problem.
  • Counting daylight hours instead of peak-sun-hours.
  • Ignoring the standby/accessory load while calculating a recharge-only result.
  • Assuming a larger panel fixes a weak battery, dragging gate, or corroded connection.
  • Mounting the panel in shade and leaving derating at 100%.

Formula

Peak-sun-hours
Ah deficit ÷ effective current

Renogy 30W 12V Monocrystalline Solar Panel

If the result shows your panel cannot replace the daily deficit in your local peak-sun-hours, a named 30W panel gives you published output specs to compare against the calculated requirement.

A bare panel is not an opener-board accessory. Do not wire a third-party controller output into an opener's solar input — follow the opener manual.

Renogy 30W Solar Panel Starter Kit with Charge Controller

When you need a panel and a matched controller together, the kit simplifies pairing — still verify the controller settings match your battery chemistry.

Standalone battery-direct topology only. Opener boards with internal charging circuitry must use the factory solar accessory.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a solar panel take to recharge a gate opener battery?

A 20W panel in full sun replaces about 1 Ah per hour of peak sun. A fully drained 7Ah battery needs ~7 hours of good sun to top up.

Why is my battery not fully recharging even in summer?

Common causes: undersized panel, shaded panel, dirty panel, undersized wire causing voltage drop, or a failing charge controller.

Does a bigger battery take longer to recharge?

Yes — proportionally. Doubling battery Ah roughly doubles the recharge time from the same panel.
