Topcoat only

When: Base is sound. Surface is thin, dusty, or lightly rutted.

Effort: 1 load of #57 or DGA, spread and grade.

Risk: Wastes material if base is the real problem.

Regrade + topcoat

When: Crown is gone or ruts are cutting into base but base is still there.

Effort: Cut high spots, redistribute, add fresh topcoat, re-crown.

Risk: Needs a box blade or landplane, or a hired grader pass.

Full rebuild

When: Base is muddy, showing clay, or has sections that heave/wash out.

Effort: Dig out failed sections, install fabric or larger stone base, then topcoat.

Risk: Highest cost — but skipping it means paying for topcoat every year.

Crown the middle

A slight rise in the center pushes water to the shoulders instead of down the wheel tracks.

Keep the ditches open

Grass, silt, and fallen limbs turn a good ditch into a sponge. Walk them each spring and fall.

Install culverts at low spots

Any point where water crosses the driveway needs a culvert sized for the runoff, not a filled-in dip.

Common gravel-driveway mistakes

Adding topcoat over failing base

New #57 stone rides across a soft, ungraded, or muddy base and disappears within a season. If ruts are showing base clay, rebuild the base before spending on topcoat.

Underestimating depth after compaction

Loose gravel loses depth after compaction — the exact amount varies by stone type, gradation, and moisture. Ordering exactly the loose-depth number can leave you short after the first storm and traffic; ask your supplier for a compaction allowance for the stone you're buying.

Skipping the crown

A driveway with no crown puddles water where the tires already wear it down. Build in enough crown to shed water sideways — the right amount depends on width, surface, and rainfall, and your local road department or contractor can suggest a target for your area.

Ignoring the low spots

Fresh material piles up in low spots and turns to soup after rain. Cut the low spot back to solid base, install a culvert or crossover, then rebuild the section.

Wrong stone for the job

Round river gravel looks nice but shifts under tires. Dense-graded aggregates (crush-and-run, DGA, or a minus-sized crushed stone) tend to lock together and compact harder — often preferred for structural layers. Confirm the right product with your local quarry.

One-time fix, no maintenance

Even a well-built rural driveway needs periodic grading and occasional topcoat refreshes. Budget for ongoing maintenance passes rather than counting on one giant rebuild.

    A tri-axle dump and a tandem dump carry very different amounts. Ordering by ton lets you compare quotes directly and reconcile against the scale ticket.

  • Stage a small maintenance pile.

    Keeping a few tons of matching stone on the property means you can drop material into fresh potholes before they widen — usually cheaper than a full grader pass.

  • Compaction often matters more than raw depth.

    Well-compacted material tends to outlast a thicker layer of loose stone through a wet season. Drive over new gravel in varied patterns to work it in before the first storm, and don't rely on a fixed compaction percentage — it varies by stone and conditions.
