Trailer Payload Calculator

Estimate usable trailer payload from GVWR, empty weight, and tongue weight for equipment hauling.

Common questions

What is trailer payload capacity?
Payload is GVWR minus empty trailer weight. It's the total cargo weight the trailer is rated to carry, including tongue-transferred weight.
How do I find my trailer's GVWR?
It's stamped on the VIN sticker, usually on the driver-side front tongue or frame rail. Never estimate — the sticker is the legal max.
What tongue weight percent is safe?
10–15% of loaded trailer weight is the standard safe range. Below 10% causes sway; above 15% strains the tow vehicle's rear axle.
Can I exceed GVWR briefly?
No — insurance, brakes, and axles are all rated to GVWR. Any overload voids warranty coverage and increases liability in an accident.
