Why does the ballast target depend on the front load?
Rear ballast counter-levers the front loader load, so a heavier load needs more counterweight. 75% of the front load is a common starting point on compact tractors; verify against your operator's manual.
Does this calculator account for tipping on slopes?
No. It checks lift capacity and counter-leverage on flat ground only. Slope limits come from the operator's manual — a tractor that is stable on flat dirt can tip on a 10-degree side slope with the loader raised.
My ballast result is Good but the loader says Over limit — now what?
Counter-leverage doesn't add lift capacity. The hydraulics and loader frame still have to pick the load up. Reduce the load, change the attachment, or use a bigger machine.
Do loaded tires count fully toward ballast?
They help stability and traction, but they sit at the axle line, not behind it. They count in this estimate, but a 3-point box of equal weight is more effective lever-for-lever.
What safety margin should I actually use?
15% on flat, dry ground for routine work. 20–25% on uneven terrain, near slopes, at max height, or with forward-biased fork loads. If you're stretching for the number, you're past the margin.
Why does pallet fork lift look so much lower than bucket lift?
Forks carry the load 12–24 inches forward of the bucket pin. That extra lever arm cuts usable lift — sometimes 30% or more versus the same weight in a bucket. Use the fork rating from your loader manual.
Does 3-point-mounted equipment count as ballast?
Yes, if it stays attached during loader work. Enter its weight in the ballast field. Weight far behind the axle counts more than close-mounted weight.
